What Is a Bottle Cap Mosaic?
A bottle cap mosaic is a picture built from bottle caps. Each cap acts as a single mosaic tile: its printed artwork, color, and texture combine with hundreds or thousands of other caps to form an overall image. From a distance, the caps vanish into the picture. Step closer, and every tile reveals itself as an individual cap.
How it works
The idea follows traditional photo mosaics. The source image is divided into a grid, and each cell is replaced by a cap whose appearance matches that region of the image. The larger the grid, the finer the detail — and the more caps you need.
Why caps are not ordinary tiles
Software that treats tiles as flat color swatches underestimates bottle caps. A real cap is a physical object:
- Artwork and texture. Each cap carries printed graphics, lettering, and a crimped metal edge. Two caps with the same dominant color can look completely different.
- Curvature and highlights. Caps are curved and reflective, with directional shading. Which way a cap faces changes what it contributes — this is why Automatic Cap Rotation exists.
- Limited supply. Unlike pixels, caps run out. A physical plan must respect how many of each design you own — the job of Cap Inventory.
Digital and physical forms
A bottle cap mosaic does not have to be physical. Many creators make digital cap mosaics — artwork rendered from cap photos, destined for screens or posters. Others plan physical mosaics assembled from real caps on a board. The two forms have different requirements, which is why Cap Mosaic Maker offers an Online Version and a Standalone Version. Try it yourself
The fastest way to understand a cap mosaic is to make one. The Online Version runs in your browser and includes a demo cap library — no collection required.
